Saludong Jawi – Philippines Timeline

Introduction
On 970(1570), the leaders of Maynila and Tondo would expel the expedition of Legaspi in Saludong which would cause the tribes not to want to convert to Catholicism, this expulsion was decided by both Lakandula, Sulayman, and Rajah Aceh/Matanda after they find out that the Spanish wanted to convert and conquer and not peaceful trade.

The Kingdom of Kaboloan would continue to be vassals of Ming and later the Qing Empire.

The Muslims would continue using the Jawi script and Animists would continue using Baybayin/Kawi/Suyat[1].

Despite the fact that the People of Saludong would overwhelmingly reject the Legaspi Expedition, the Spanish would establish settlements in the southern Riviera of Luzon, the area of Cavite and Calatagan which would actually convert to Christianity, coastal Ibalons or Coastal Bicolanos would convert to Christianity as well, the areas in Saludong that the Spanish had gotten to subjugate would later switch languages to Nueva Castilian Chavacano to disassociate with their Muslim and Animist neighbors which would create the new ethnic group of Nueva Castilian Chavacanos.[2]

The Muslims of Saludong would form the Sultanate of Saludong(also called as Sultanato de Tagala by the Spanish) later on but it would focus on it being a government for the Muslims which would later secularize as the Republic of Saludong.

1.The Spanish burnt and destroyed the Jawi script manuscripts in Luzon in this timeline it does not happen.

2. This is what happened in Mindanao IOTL, this timeline is based on the premise of the tribes in Luzon not converting to Catholic in a similar vein to the Mindanaoans.

The failed conquest of Manila
On 1570 Lakandula, Sulayman/Sulayman III, and Rajah Aceh/Matanda would find out that the Spanish wanted to convert and conquer and not peaceful trade, Rajah Aceh/Matanda would recognize that Miguel Lopez de Legaspi is from the same race as his captors in the Elcano expedition and he was not happy that he was there and the goals of the Spanish was to evangelize and conquer that land and make it a part of Spain which would enslave their own people.

The three rulers have decided that they would want to expel the Spanish from Saludong and prevent them from having a foothold in the island and not allow them to convert anyone and they would tell the people what the Spanish wanted to accomplish and that they had not come for the good of the people of Saludong.

In the end of 1570 the Spanish would be expelled the three rulers and the people of Saludong forcing the Spanish to go back to Sugbu from Manila.

Note:
The difference from this timeline is that Aceh, Matanda, and Sulayman supported the Spanish, ITTL this does not happen but that does not mean the Spanish would not try again.

Portuguese succession
On 1570s Sebastian and Henry, the Bishop King would discuss about the succession of Portugal and they would decide that the next King of Portugal if they died without children would be the Count of Parma who would succeed in the Kingdom of Portugal.

Alexander Farnese would send his son Rannucio and daughter Margherita to have Portuguese education so they can succeed in Portugal after the death of Duarte, Duke of Guimaraes and Rannucio would be granted of Guimaraes in order to secure Alexander Farnese’ succession.

After the death of King Sebastian in 1579 and Henry, the Bishop King in 1582, Alexander would have his daughter, Margherita marry Philip II, giving Philip II a regent for his son, Philip III and someone who would ensure peace between the two countries when she was living and Isabella Clara Eugenia would marry Rannucio, the eldest daughter of Philip II which would give him familial connections with the Spanish royal family.

Expulsion of the Japanese Pirates in Saludong and the expansion of Islam in the North of Saludong
In the 1580s Japanese pirates would end up being expelled by Moros in Cagayan and the people of Caboloan in the North in the Coasts of Cagayan and Caboloan, the Japanese piracy was a remnant of Majapahit’s trade with Ryukyu during the time Saludong was under Majapahit influence which would also attract Japanese piracy as the Japanese felt safe making the area also a base and because the Cagayan Moros and the Kingdom of Caboloan no longer have a reason to maintain relations with the Japanese due to the demise of Majapahit control in Saludong they have no reason to maintain the pirates presence in Saludong and their old relations with the Japanese.

The Lowlands of Caboloan would have slowly converted to Islam as well but the conversion of the Cagayan Moros was faster that the conversion progressed at a fast pace upstream the valley of Cagayan, the Cagayanes would predominate as the leading Muslims in the Cagayan Valley and the Pacific Seashore of Saludong which would be divided into Irraya, Aripas , Gaddanes, Yogad, Dadayad, and Katalaganes(Pacific coast area) which would eclipse the importance of the Ybanags and Apayaos who were the people who were utilized by Majapahit to trade with the Japanese back then and they would be seen as unclean by the Cagayanes due to their collaboration with the Majapahitans, the introduction of Islam in the Island of Saludong started due to Dayang Kaylangitan’s rule of Tondo legalizing the religion of Islam in the late 15th century in the Island of Saludong but the adoption of Islam was slow but it would speed up in the later 16th century especially after the arrival of the Spanish, Dayang Kaylangitan was said to be the mother of Islam in Saludong and the Sultanate of Saludong when the religion of Islam in Saludong was organized and she was the one that expelled the Majapahit in Saludong.

Philip II
On 1582, Philip II would already know about the new colony of the Philippines and found about the failed parts of the expedition and the Portuguese heir, Alexander I ascending to the throne, he is less pleased about the new condition in Iberia and the East Indies but he could not do anything by now as his hands are full and he has a new bride in the person of Margherita Farnese, his new wife, the sister of the Portuguese King, although they would try again in the future in another project to unite Portugal with the other Spanish Kingdoms, but it will take centuries for that to happen again.

Philip II would have issues with the Dutch rebellion until his own death in 1598 as the Dutch would want independence due to their religion being suppressed by the Catholics in the Netherlands ruled by the Spanish.

On December 10, 1599, Isabella Clara Eugenia would give birth to a healthy heir, a daughter, named Mary, she was initially sickly, but he would turn out to be very much healthy.

Isabella Clara Eugenia would sign a cease fire with the Dutch Protestants on 1600 and issued a toleration edicts for the protestants and this would start the end of the protestant revolt in the Netherlands, she would face the first part of the 30 years war on the last decades as the ruler of the Netherlands until her death in 1630 and decided to stay out from it.

A marriage and the entry of the Portuguese
On 1575, the Tondo Principality and Manila would fight against Limahong, a Chinese pirate who would end up being expelled in the Island of Saludong/Luzon, Princess Kandarapa of Tondo would refuse marrying the Macabebe chieftain and wanted to marry someone else, she would end up marrying Kasikis of Caboloan.

The Portuguese Missionaries from Malacca would enter in Caboloan on 1580s, the Ilocanos, Pangasinan would convert to Christianity as well to differentiate them from the other Lowlanders would convert to Christianity and the Cordillera highlanders aside from the Isnegs would convert to Christianity as well which would form the basis of a Portuguese colony in Samtoy and Caboloan.

The Portuguese would ally with Tondo and Brunei in another skirmish against the Castilians in 1591 when they would try again to have some foothold in Saludong/Luzon again.
