Saddam Hussein killed or captured

Basically, what it says. Saddam Hussein, his sons and his key high command are killed or captured within the first two weeks of the Iraq War. How do things shake out then?

You'll recall that under General Garner, the plan was originally to get out of Iraq in a period of months. He was replaced rather quickly with Bremer who decided to hang in for the long haul. The decision to dissolve the Iraq army was made under Bremer, while Saddam was still at large and there were potential loyalty issues. Originally, the plan was to keep the Iraqi army intact. Once the army is dissolved, US forces are tied into maintaining security.

So, let's take Saddam off the Board early. What happens? Do we go home early? Do we stay? Do we march into Syria?

Garner is still going to be sacked. Read the Assassin's Gate or Imperial Life in the Emerald City - the Bush administration was determined to "remake" Iraq no matter what. An early death or capture of Saddam wouldn't change these plans - in fact, they were generally surprised that he remained hidden as long as he did.

It's not like a more "successful" occupation keeps him in place and he can prevent those horrible policy decisions - he was fired in large part because of his opposition to those policies.
