Saddam does not invade Kuwait

becaus the us is still not going to be frindly with iran, if iraq keeps more or less out of kuwait and the saudis, the us and iraq are going to be allies.
Sadam was see in quite a good light in the late 80`s. He was anti iran, wasent a commin or pro su(ussr), they did build a loth of hospital and schools.

I don't remember anything like that.

Indeed when you consider how hated Iran was during that period, that fact that the US did not flood Iraq with weapons and support during the Iran/Iraq War is strong evidence that we didnot see him in a good light.

What reason the USA and Iraq would have to deal with each other? The reason is oil. The USA is an oil importer, Iraq an exporter, hence you'll have a somewhat large trade between both countries, as well as American companies investing in Iraq.

THe US gets most of it's oil from Canada and Mexico. Iraq dealt mostly with European countries, if I remember correctly.

Iran would remain an enemy and rival of the US. Also without the Persian Gulf War Iran would remain even more of an enemy and danger. In TTL the US might invade Iran instead of Iraq.

...

Interesting point, that without the Iran/Iraq War that Iran would have been less weaken in TTL?

Must of the stuff they inherited from the Shah was American, no spares.

Indeed their weakness is what motivated Saddam to invade.

No invasion, could they have rearmed with other suppliers?

Become a major threat to shipping?

US allies with Iraq in response?

Is that how you see it?

Hussein didn't just wake up one day and thought, what am I going to do today?
hmmm...
let's annex Kuweit!

There were growing tensions, between both contries before.
Saddam saw Iraq as a shield of the arabic world against the spreading of the Iranian revolution.
That is why he asked for financial help especially in Kuweit after the war against Iran. I think he wanted 1 billion US$.
There was a comment made by the US ambassador shortly before the invasion, that the US would stay out of the conflict. That's why Saddam thought he could get away with it.

So we would need a stroger involvement of the US in the conflict to prevent the invasion.

A bancrupt Iraq is not that likely to imagine.
Nobody b ut Iran would profit from a collapse of Iraq. So it would be prevented somehow.

Saddam Hussein didn't belong to political Islam before 1990, he even had a Christian foreign minister before the Invasion.
