From looking at a map it seems like a lot of the oil and gas reserves of Siberia are in the territory of the Sibir Khanate, which could make things interesting if it manages to hold onto that territory long enough.

I dunno. It sounds unlikely to me that a country so full of oil and gas would be in the hands of a non-European khanate long after this fact becomes known. Unless the discovery comes as late as OTL, in which case it's already going to be in someone's sphere of influence.

Didn't happen in OTL with the Middle East...of course that was coupled with a surge in nationalism. I suppose one could posit a similar scenario if there was a pan-Turkic movement at the time when the oil was discovered (are the Sibirs Turkic?)
