Russian Philippines

Russia always craved having warm waters access... but never could completely fulfill this dream. Let's say they content themselves with some colonial shopping, and while still blocked south on loand by Qing China, they embark (literally) in a Western Pacific adventure. Leaving apart mysterious and closed Japan, they have a deal with the French for supporting each other in an area up to then territory of British, Dutch and Spanish interests only. The French go on conquering Indochina, whereas the Russians, still sore about their loss in the Crimean conflict, wage war upon Spain, to no serious objection of anyone, and grab the Philippines around 1860. A few years later they sell unprofitable Alaska as per OTL.
How long could they remain in the archipelago? And what the consequences of them being in control of such an alien land, furthermore strongly by now mostly strongly Catholic?

The best bet for this would have to be in 1820s. 1860s would probably be a bit late, since the Catholics have the strong majority here. I believe you might be looking for The Bear Migrates to the Pacific, and I had the Russians grab the Philippines from Spain after they had a different kind of Napoleonic Wars. Also, you may want to move this to before 1900s.

This could go hand-in-hand with the Russians keeping a trade post on Kauai in Hawaii and eventually taking control of the island. You would want it on a earlier time, maybe grabbing them during the Napoleonic wars

Also, have the Russian Navy developed way earlier and you can have a Russian Philippines. Of course, you can even have (maybe this might be ASB) Russia allying with Britain and Prussia at the start of the Seven Years War (Peter III has to be Tsar in order to make this work, Elizabeth has to die early, and maybe Catherine the Great may have to be shipped off to become a nun or something.) and have the Russians and Brits conquering the Philippines from Spain (but in a twist of luck, the Russians betray the British when Catherine the Great is sprung from her imprisonment as a nun, forcing Russia to betray Britain and France.)

So what if the Russians take the Philippines or Hawaii? They still don't have any warm water port of any major - in fact, of any, consequence.

No, but you gotta admit, the idea of a Russian Pacific colony is cool. :D You may even see a more vigorous Pacific theater of the Crimean War

A vigorous Pacific Theater of the Crimean War where Spain is itching to get its islands back but utterly fails to do so.

Having a warm water port in the Philippines would be nice for Russia and such, but that still doesn't solve the problem of Russia not having a warm water port back at home to get to the Philippines. It would be akin to Switzerland or Bavaria having a colony in South America.

So, if the Russians can't get Vladivostok as the OP proposed, where else can Russia go to get their coveted warm water port to supply the Philippines? The Indus Valley, or Persia perhaps?

There's also Okhotsk, but I doubt that remains ice-free in the winter time. Taking Manchuria and Korea from China would also work, as well as making Persia a protectorate.

Trade with Japan is worth more than the likes of Wake and Midway.

Yeah. Someone asked me how would Russia get a Pacific port if they don't have Vladivostok. Also, I'm doing two different kinds of TLs, both with a pro-Russian Philippines, but one of them is a pro-Russian, anti-communist, extremely nationalist Philippines that was resulted from the 5,000 White Russian refugees deciding to stay in the Philippines. See Tubabao's Miracle for more details.

Kiat, apparently I can't edit my Russian Philippines TL for some odd reason. I may have to start all over again, and I need an idea for a catchy title.
