During the Russian civil war there were loads of nations that wanted and fought for independence ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro-independence_movements_in_Russian_Civil_War ) could any of these countries gain independence? Which ones? How would these nations develop? How can we make these independent with a POD after 1900? Would/could other nations take parts of Russia in the chaos (Japan taking north or something)? How would this affect Russia? Could any other nations secede (like Kazakhstan)? Could we also have Russia and the Soviet Union existing at the same time (Russia in North soviets in South or something else)? Presumably this would happen after a central power victory so they could support nation like Ukraine. I'm thinking of writing a time line on this so any help will really be appreciated!

It was briefly bulkanized - the Red unfortunately defeated the forces that wanted independence. The first problem would be the Red Russian Army would have to be nerf'd. The second problem is leadership - most of the leadership was a mixed bag of fighting among themselves, incompetence, insanity, or otherwise.

As for Japan taking something - Green Ukraine would be the best option. But I fear it would not last long - the Russians would in World War Two invade it.

As for the Ukraine - there would be some major problems. A hostile Poland to the west and Red Russia to the east. A buffer nation does not last long. In World War Two - Germany would take Poland and Russia would run over the Ukraine, and it is likely Germany would in Barbarossa invade Ukraine (unless Ukraine is willing to sell oil to the Nazis).

My favorite TL would be Roman von Ungern-Sternberg - Russian Mongolia and Outer Mongolia could be a start of a nation.
