Russia and Japan divide Korea

What if in the Russo-Japanese War, Russia had succeeded in splitting Korea into two spheres of influence between itself and Japan more or less analogous to the historic split following World War Two.

Later on, Japan annexes the south following the death of Ito Hirobumi whereas a rump Korea Empire exists in the north under Russian protection.

I suspect it would not last. I would suspect that during the Russian Revolution, the Japanese would seize the opportunity to "liberate" the northern Korea so to keep it out of Lenin's hands. There would be some weak protest by the US and China - wherein Japan would look outwards wondering where they would attack next.

The outcome suggests the Russian military performed well and Russia likely persists in its efforts to economically penetrate China. Good news for Anglo-German relations.
