Rupublic of Biafra lives?

The world is a bit more blunt in its support? I don't know. Biafra was backed by Israel, France, Portugal, Rhodesia, South Africa and the Vatican. With all those, they would logically win.

France is the only one of those that matters. Portugal was too busy trying to hang on to Angola and Mozambique, fighting a losing battle against a raging tide. Israel was hated by everybody except the USA at that point. Rhodesia and South Africa had too many problems trying to hang on to what they had to bother trying to help Biafra.

So how would the UK have reacted to this? France protecting Biafra?

Seems all the former French African nations that bordered Nigeria would not get involved. If they had allowed supplies to go via there borders then things might have ended up been different. But illegal weapons smuggling did happen. Found out there were foreign mercenaries fighting for the Biafra side.

So it seems in order for Biafra to be independent they needed to make a deal to give the UK. oil at bottom rock prices. ALso, if they had gotten there hand on good tanks they might have been able to hold there own. They also needed to neutralize the Nigerian Federal navy.

Found this site where a poster put some info. on the war.

Found a map which shows the Biafran and Federal lines:

If there were no oil in Biafra then chances are they might be independent today. So we just need to wait for the oil to run out.

Found this news report from 2007 on oil and Biafra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC71Vu36V-s&feature=related

By AH username would probably be different, and a certain Dead Kennedys front man would probably also have (by pure coincidence, I assure you ;) ) the same name.

What was the deal with Nigeria during the Cold War anyway? Managing to get both the Brittish and the Soviets on the same side?

Actually, Nixon privately supported the Biafrans. Perhaps if he had been more vocal and had actually helped them, the pro-Biafran countries might just be able to secure its survival. Actually, Ojukwu asked the Nixon Administration to step in and mediate in February of 1969.

Had the Biafran Army at the beginning of the war a chance to conquer Lagos and ursurp the Nigerian goverment? The scources seems not clear about it.

Otherwise, WI not Gowon, a Christian, was president of Nigeria, but a Muslim from the North. World opinion give mostly a damm about suffering Christians, but what if the Civil war had much more the flavor of an genocid at Christians through Muslims. Or the muslim president leanes much more to Nassar and Washington starts to see him as a soviet client.
Would it made a differnt if there is a conservativ goverment in Britain?

Perhaps if the Muslim "president", prier to the revolt began to speak fondly of Nasserism and vocal requested Soviet military and economic aid the United States and Britain would be more willing to consider aid towards the Igbo.
