Rump Austrian Empire after World War I Revised

The Russian Prime Minister reached out to officials in the Ukraine in an attempt to defuse the new crisis and prevent a military solution> The Police were investigating the attack but the failure to find out who was behind it was making the Military angry.
The Hungarian Army was increasing its prescience near the border after having pulled them back. There was little trust of the Russian army forces

The Russian Prime Minister appealed to the Duma for support at resolving the Ukraine Crisis. The Duma passed a resolution showing support for the Prime Minister and opposition to a Military solution. Czar Michael I supported Kerensky and ordered the War Minister not to invade the Ukraine.

Ukrainian political authorities were attempting to put out the fires that threaten to turn the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine into a full scale war. They knew thet the Russian Prime Minister had gone out of his way to find a solution and if they didn't take steps the hardliners might win and unleash the Russian Army.

The Ukrainian Police began to carry out raids with a goal of crushing the Militant base who had carried out the attacks on the Russian efforts to seal the border. But what this did was to drive the opposition deeper under ground. Austrian Intelligence had some idea that the resistance might plan something that would happen in a year or more but the independence movement was not dead. The Abwehr tended to agree with the Austrians.

So the Austrian Chancellor met with his Romanian counterpart and discussed the matter of the Ukraine. He stopped in Budapest and held talks with the Hungarians. The Romanians would have been surprised to learn that the Hungarians shared the same opinion of the threat in the east. A Russian Military build up was not leading to stability along the border region. There had been several incident and the Hungarian army was increasing its troop strength along the border.
Kaiser Otto I met with the Bavarian Monarch at his home in Bavaria. The Former German Army commander from the last war had a good pulse on what was happening with the German Military.

April 1,1940 The situation in the Ukraine reignited after 6 months of calm. The Ukrainian Liberation Front blew up several railroad crossings into the Ukraine. It also seized arms and munitions. It killed several pro-Russian Politicans and announced a war of independence from Russia. Arms and artillery was seized from mobilization depots and the ULF seized control of the capital of the Ukraine

The Crisis in the Ukraine had now reached the boiling point>Prime Minister Kerensky submitted his resignation which the Czar refused. The Czar called the War Minister and the Minister of the Interior to the Palace.

The ULA (Ukraine Liberation Army) had carried out surprise attacks on Russian troops guarding the border with Romania, Hungary and Poland and the result was that 3 divisions were destroyed. The Russian Commander gathered up the troops and proceeded to fight his way back to Russia.. The Minister of War began moving Russian forces to the Ukrainian border. Three Tank Brigades, 2 Mechanized Corps,6 Rifle Divisions,2 artillery divisions and 3 cavalry Divisions were there and more were coming A Paracute Division was dropped in Crimea thus strengthening Russian forces there.

Russia's Prime Minister met with the German, Austrian and Hungarian Ambassadors in a group meeting. He wanted to reassure them that Russia had no intention of starting a conflict with the West. He had tried to settle the problem without the use of force but actions by the ULA had now moved things to a military conflict.

Both Britain and France warned the Russians that a military solution to the Ukraine problem was not a good idea and was causing a lot of uneasiness in Europe. Still the Russian war Minister said failure to respond would cause problems in the Far East and in other parts of Russia.
Austria continued to modernize its military.

Russian troops crossed into the Ukraine . The 1st Mechanized Corp,1st and 5th Tank Brigades(T-26),12th and 18th Rifle Divisions comprised the 11th Army and they were joined by the 17 Cavalry Corp (3 Cavalry Divisions), Pushing Along the coast was the 2nd Mechanized corp,11 Tank Brigade,41st and 43rd Rifle Divisions.

The Ukrainian Liberation Army responded to the invasion by the Russian Army by using every trick that they had to defeat them. They used captured Russian weapns both tanks and antitank guns to inflict damage on the invaders.UKA soldiers were veterans of the First World War and former members of the Russian Army that were from the Ukraine. The UKA pleaded with the Poles, Hungarians and Romanians for help. They sought planes and more weapons.

Weapons that had been captured from the Russian Imperial Army during the First World War flowed into the Ukraine and helped to equip the ULA need for additional weapons. The Hungarian , Romanian and Polish Governments were helping to insure the flow of weapons. The ULA had engaged the Russian Forces and had surprised the Russian forces by their willingness to fight and die. The War Minister was very upset that the ULA had captured Russian T-26 tanks and 45mm Antitank guns.

Germany and Austria were discussing the Ukraine situation which both were felling was getting out of control. Austria felt that the crisis had reached the point were it could rapidly explode into a larger conflict . Romania, Hungary and Poland had little desire to see the Russian Imperial Army once again on its borders.

While Russia was suffering through problems in the Ukraine it wasn't the only place in Europe to undergo chaos. Italy had so far gone through two governments post Mussolini and the appeared to be more troubles on the horizon. Yugoslavia was also suffering and the Army finally staged a coup throwing out the Regent and putting the young King on the thrown. This crisis alarmed Austria,Romania and Greece. The Austrians were nearly done with their modernization of the military but the thought of a possible conflict was chilling.

Austria received visits from the French Premier who talked with the Austrian Chancellor and Kaiser. Then there was a visit from Winston Churchill currently a member of the British Parliament and in charge og the Admiralty. Once again the Austrian Kaiser and Chancellor discussed the Austrian view point of the Crisis in the Ukraine, Yugoslavia and Italy. Then the Current German War Minister, who was currently the Bavarian King and rumored to be the next possible German Chancellor came for a visit.

The Russian War Minister had an emergency meeting with the Czar and the Russian Prime Minister. It seemed that an incident in the Far East had exploded into an armed conflict with the Forces of Imperial Japan. It was a border dispute and he wanted the two aware of the problem. The Russian War Minister had ordered the Far Eastern Reserves deployed but more force would be needed He had also ordered the reserve forces available for the Ukraine Campaign to be deployed in the Ukraine. He was recommending a General Mobilization order

With a two front war now a reality The Czar approved full mobilization of Russia's military. Japan had bought European designs to improve its tanks. Japan had pulled its forces out of China and had reached an agreement with the Chinese. Russia's Prime Minister wanted to attempt to reach a settlement with the Ukraine as he felt it was better to let the Ukraine go than to possibly trigger a European war.

Hungary, Romania and Poland ordered mobilization of reservist when they received inteligence that Russia was ordering a general mobilization of its reservist. Conversations took place between Austria and Germany on the matter. Austria consulted the British Government and the French to gain their response to Russian Mobilization. The Austrian War ministry did not order a mobilization but did retain reservist undergoing training for an additional 4 weeks.

The Austrian Imperial Government was very concern with the War in the Ukraine and was also worried about conditions in Yugoslavia and Italy. The Regency in Yugoslavia had come to an end as a result of a military coup which had overthrown the Regent and placed the Young King on the throne. In Italy the country had seen 4 Prime Ministers since the overthrow of Mussolini and the leftist government had fallen and it appeared that a moderate Fascist Government was about to come to power.
