Were the Entente to lose WWI, which path do you think is more likely for France to go down? Will the far-right resurrect the monarchy, or will the workers rise up? Or will neither happen?

I know it's a bit vague, but I'm interested in the Board's opinion of these two rather common tropes.

Poll incoming.

What did they lose? One thing for sure the third republic wouldn't survive a defeat considering they had trouble surviving the victory.

Red Seems much much more likely Communists have always had a lot of power in France in a way they didn't in Germany, however I could see a civil war as leftists fight the hard right Catholics, think Spain 1936, I can't see a Monarchy coming out of it though, unless France falls apart or Germany and the UK are 110% unwilling to live next to a Communist nation, invade and make somebody King/Emperor to keep them in line.

I say it depends on how the war is lost.

As for the previous posters assertion of a Monarchy restored by Germany/AH: Wouldn't that be unpopular with the French people to the point of auctualy triggering a leftist revolution?

Monarchy, no way in hell Imperial Germany tolerates a Red France.

just like the UK, Canada, Australia, India, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Poland, Romania, Serbia, and the US wouldn't tolerate Red Russia? if the war is a bloody and messy as OTL the German people will not want or allow another major war, and an occupation of all of France by Germany with 1919 tech is.... well I don't think it could be done, and to try would drag Germany face first into a bloody mess.

France is both a hell of a lot smaller and a hell of a lot closer then Russia. To be fair, if they kept to themselves (as Stalin, "Communism in one country"), I can see the Germans waving a fist in their general direction once in a while as a break from the business of being German. If the French start promoting revolution in neighbouring countries, and especially if that results in some German noble or industrialist getting lynched, things are going to get very nasty very quickly. This is the same army that happens to have a nation, after all ;)

There's a huge difference between France and Russia geopolitically, as is the heart of Western Europe going Red as opposed to a country that quite a few didn't see as European at all.

unless of course it's a late victory: Germany will be exhausted, nearing economic collapse, have to exert considerable energy to hold Austria-Hungary together, be busy absorbing new colonies, and possibly still be faced with a Red Russia in the East. Germany could make life very hard for a Red France, but having just come through a long, difficult war, they might have to let it stand lest their own reds start making trouble.

Royalism (of any variety) was pretty much a joke by the turn of the century, it's incredibly unlikely it could make a serious resurgence.

I'm guessing a massive series of riots, at least one communist uprising, possibly a minor civil war, and the collapse of the Third Republic. I doubt that West Europe and the US (if they were involved) would enjoy a Red France though, and they'd supply any non-red revolution and/or any official government.

It can really go anywhere between communist revolution, right-wing, or a new Fourth Republic.

What's left of Alsace (supposing the Germans want it), German occupation of northeastern France for 15 years, their Equatorial African colonies, and they have to pay reparations.
Well, there's no way France will be able to mount a serious challenge to Germany. Too economically, industrially, and demographically crippled.

But in all honesty, it's hard to tell. A civil war would almost certainly spark, and its highly unlikely the Third Republic would be able to endure. I'd lean towards a Red France, in all honesty, or a Fourth Republic.
