Rough idea for a timeline

Which I may or may not do, we'll have to see.

Constantine the Great dies at Milivan Bridge, and Christian persecution continues. The Persians respond to this by promoting Christianity in Persia, and floods of Roman Christians flee eastward into the Sassanid Empire. Around 350ish, the Persians adopt a form of Christianity-- it's essentials are the same as "Roman" Christianity but in many ways it is radically different- no Christmas for example, and the Romans, rather than the Jews, are blamed for the death of Christ. Other bits of the faith tacked on by the Romans in OTL are ignored, and some elements of the faith are very Zoroastrian and dualistic... in general Persia never adopts a fixed Christianity, instead various Shahanshahs favour distinct Christian sects.

Anyway, the pagan Roman Empire suffers similar problems to the Christian one, what with division and all, and with no Constantinople, there is no "fresh start" for the Eastern Empire, which suffers greatly at the hands of Persian and rebel Roman Christians. The Huns of the Caucasus are converted to Sassanid Christianity, and encouraged to declare Holy War on the pagan Romans. Attila, "God's Own Scourge" descends on the Roman Empire, causing chaos in the name of the One True God, Ahura Mazda, and his son Jesus Christ.

Basically, what I'm getting at in the end is an Islamic West (caused by a coincidental Mohammed-analogue, or God working in mysterious ways, whatever floats your boat) and a Christian-ish East, centred on Mesopotamia, both struggling for control over the Holy Lands, and the trade routes to the East. Indian and Chinese stuff happens too... and alt-Vikings! Muslim alt-Vikings!

Yay, or nay?

Yay! Do research. Lots.

The Huns must fragment as IOTL. They don't have a structure to outlast Atilla.

Ask for plenty of help.

Sounds good but be careful. If you mess with religion too much it can really irritate people. But as long as you don't go out of your way to discredit a religion or radically change its core beleifs you should be fine. The idea has potential.
