Roosevelt and Hearst at the 1932 DNC

The other day I was reading a book on the Democratic convention in 1932. FDR's victory was far from secure, although he did lead, he didn't have enough to clinch the nomination without the support of Garner, whose delegates were controlled by William Randolph Hearst. Hearst eventually yielded and promised the delegates to FDR in exchange for some pledges from him (mostly stay out of the League of Nations and Internationalism). FDR agreed and Hearst switched his delegates to FDR from Garner. Complicated but it's what happened and by 1940 Hearst was near powerless and FDR could forget the pledges he made to Hearst.

But then I remembered Garner's quote about the vice-presidency's worth.
"Not worth a bucket of warm [spit]."

So here is my question:

If Garner declines the nomination to VP in 1932, who would take his place? How would a different First VP affect Roosevelt's presidency?

Also as an aside, how ASB would it be for Hearst to get the VP spot?

As for VP candidates, I believe Governors Ritchie and Dern (sp?) of Maryland and Utah respectively were on FDR's short list. If you're reading the book I think you are, it has a brief list of the possibilities. :)

Of those two possibilities, I believe that Dern would have died during FDR's first term, and Ritchie would have passed away soon after, so you would probably get a new VP on the 1936 ticket and possibly an earlier call for the OTL 25th amendment.
