Rommel

What would have been the result if Hitler appionted Rommel supreme commander of all axis forces and Adolph Galland head of all the Luftwaffe

If Hitler actually gave his generals a little slack and let them operate freely, a more efficent war effort on Germany's part. Not that it alone would change things.

And anything to get Goering out of direct command.

Manstein would be a better bet. Rommel was inspiring and a great tactical leader but when it came to stone cold strategic brilliance you can't beat Manstein. I mean he gave Germany WW2 on a platter with his plan for the attack on France and Hitler managed to throw it away.

So Rommel is head of OKW? When?

Well, firstly, this does not change much. Despite the theoretical command structure, OKH effectivly ran the eastern front as it's own little fiefdom. So Rommel is in effect going to be running the western front, and that's it. And Hitler is probably not going to want to change that, as it had been his policy to keep various administrative and military commands divided and competing.

But I dont think that Rommel becoming Generalisimo of the german war effort is going to be enough to win it all. He was a good tactician, but his strategic vision was not particularly strong. And he was a gambler as a commander, and it is easy to see him risking to much on one last offensive.

as for Galland, I dont think it is war-winning, but almost anybody would be better than goering.

I agree about Rommel being a good tactician, but a lousy strategist. Galland might have done a better job with fighters, but what about bombers and transport, which Germany was lacking in both numbers and quality.

When?
Rommel? Good general, certainly... but there is a tendancy for his reputation to end up rather overblown in some quaters.

Rommel always wanted to retreat to the final fallback position without fighting for land in between - you just need to look at his retreat across Libya, abandoning it all to achieve the S Tunisia line, his plans to do the same if the Allies landed in Italy (withdraw to Lombardy) and his stated opinion that if convinced the war in France was lost he would withdraw to the Rhineland

Going FORWARDS he could be a genius, and in counter-attacks, but he was always reckless and a gambler (eg got caught behind enemy lines on the Egyptian border and only escaped due to luck).

As for Galland, put him in charge of defence and fighter procurement
