The Roman empire falls apart completely during the crisis of the third century, with no one to pull it back together.

Can a bunch of non-barbarian successor states keep Europe out of the dark ages?

None of the barbarian tribes have the cohesion or power to keep the west-empire intact though they could cave up the provinces between themselves. You would still
have a dark age albeit an earlier one.

However the east-empire is still rich and military powerful assuming the can say on peaceful terms or decisively defeat the Sassanid’s.

They would have the manpower to launce a camping to the west and reclaim Rome. Without any pesky plague getting in the way.

Barbarians keep something out of a dark age is kind of an oxymoron, seeing as they were one of the things that caused it.

that said, surviving Gallic and Palmyrene would be very interesting, but I can't see them preventing the Dark Ages..

Non-barbarian; almost certainly, so long as they can defend themselves.

It'd be interesting to read a timeline based on massively successful Cimbri and Teutones... You could have a young Caesar as a General in the Cimbric Kingdom of northern italy, with the Teutones taking Narbonensis.
