Romans on the Lake Chad

Isolated enough to survive the general collapse of Rome in later centuries?
Because if so... that could be awesome fodder for a bizarro expedition to Africa.
(Neat idea - all those texts we're recovering from microscopic scanning of burned scrolls from Alexandria? They have actual copies down there when they're recontacted in the C.whatever.)

The Sahara desert made its establishment a fluke in my thoughts, so... yes, I say it could survive as it isn't really going to have any institutional reliance on the Roman Empire. In practical terms it would always be standing on its own two feet, and any attempt to move significant numbers of Romans in would expose those same Romans to disease - so they can't really enforce their will in any meaningful way.

They pay tribute to Rome out of respect and tradition, rather than any great concern that the Empire will crush them if they don't.

Bizarro Africa is going to be an interesting discovery at any rate.

Though knowledge and scrolls of that quantity IMO seems unlikely. Those scrolls aren't cheap to duplicate, why would Leptis Magna spend so much money to send copies? Fun idea - but I can't see it happening.

Hm.

Would this state and its influence alter/butterfly the Bantu spread? That's one of the major events in African development... could you have a homogenized Bantu east and centre, and the west being a bit less Bantu-influenced?
Edit - wait, whoops, that's a bit further south. Ah well.
