Romans Invade Hibernia

Historyfan 92

If you want a motive either have an ambitious general in Britannia looking to establish a name who has to invade to 'suppress raiders' or an emperor who feels a need to do a Claudius and establish his prestige by adding something to the empire.

Hmm, could be I am mistaken, but Agricola, the roman governor of Britannia, no had plans about invading Hibernia?

According to Tacitus's Agricola, Agricola thought that he could subdue all of Ireland with only one legion (and, I assume, lots of British auxiliaries).

Perhaps he goes in undermanned and gets stomped and the Roman leadership decides to send in another army to crush the Irish in order to blot out the memory of the defeat.

On the Face of it, there is nothing worth the Roman's invading. True, there are gold mines, but other than that, just peat bogs and barbarians. The Romans don't know about the gold, and Caledonia was more threatening. The only reason the Romans invade is if there is one ambitious general who feels a need to conquer something, anything. If he wins, hooray! If he fails, the bulk of the army crushes him.

Perhaps it's best not to start off with an invasion but a JC-type raid. Perhaps some of the British ruling elite families who appeared to have fled to Ireland after the Roman Conquest start to do a few raids, aiding any resistance, etc and so the Romans launch a raid to teach them a lesson. Then perhaps they decide it is worth a full invasion

They did do a JC raid because some auxiliaries got sent over at one point. Nobody though followed up though.
