You know, why do we always see Roman steam engines, and never Roman canals, Roman banking systems, etc?

Because we're war nerds, not accountants. Besides there's no Batton and Durstein of Ephesus to springboard off of.

Though you do make an awfully good point, the only real aspect of modern society that was lacking in Periclean Greece and 10thc China was double entry bookkeeping.

The Romans had canals didn't they?
