Roman Mamluk/Janissaries

If Augustus or some other later emperors replace the Praetorian Guard by a slave army with excellent training and equipment and loyal only to the emperor, Will this in the long run help the empire? Contribute to its stability? Perhaps less civil wars but more coups d'état? no Crisis of the Third Century? More enduring dynasties?

It depends. In what form are they and how dominant are they in the military structure. Byzantium could easily have gained this sort of scenario with the Huns/Avars.

It kind of existed with the German body guards for the roman emperors -- and think the Vargarians -- now just take it to getting kids and trained as warriors from like 8 - 10 and made elite troops.

I think ir Would be better for the Empire and more compatible a model closert o that the Janissaries, an elite infantary paid personally by the emperor nas loyal only to him and tb é dynasty.
