ROC troops join the Korean War

Mao after consulting with Stalin decides if France wants to interfere in Chinese matters he will become a more active participant in the Indochina War. Plans are made to send 100,000 volunteers to assist the Vietminh in their fight. With the arrival of the newly arrived ships from the Soviet Union training starts for the Chinese to learn how to operate its new fleet.

That would likely kick off WWIII, as that would be an Article 5 issue by France, as Vietnam was part of France.

Ir was one thing to overlook material, that many men, quite another

Doesn't apply. Per Article 5 of the Washington Treaty (AKA NATO Charter) it only applies to Europe and North America. Below is the actual text of the article:

"The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all,"

*Bold mine

Status Update.

It is June 1951and the Korean Conflict has gone on for a year. ITTL ROC troops have entered the fray after training by the US. 9 ROC divisions are in Korea. At the same time the ROC has invaded Hainan trying to retake the island from the PRC. Initially the US stationed the 7th fleet to protect the invasion force from PRC intervention later the French navy replaced it as a blocking force. Mao appealed to Stalin for help who transferred ships from the Pacific Fleet to China where the PRC personnel are in training to learn how to man the ships. Mao has plans to help the Vietminh in Indochina in their war with France.

Well, Algeria is also part of article 5, but yeah, the point still stands.
