Robert Taft dies in 1951.

I'm not sure how plausible this is, as my medical knowledge is limited. But what if Taft's cancer had ended his life two years before he died historically? Without Taft's presence as the likeliest nominee for the Republican nomination, Dwight Eisenhower probably won't seek the nomination. So, removing Taft removes Eisenhower as a potential President. So, if Taft is dead in 1951, who is the likeliest Republican nominee, and what would his Presidency look like?

I agree that Warren's the most likely. But the conservative wing will have to field somebody.

Maybe MacArthur? He was damaged by this point, but without Taft he's the most well known conservative I can think of.

Warren/MacArthur?

John Bricker perhaps. Very conservative and has experience as a Senator, Governor and Vice Presidential candidate.

Everett Dirsken would be a better choice. He just knocked off the Senate Majority Leader which should get him attention despite his relative lack of experience, and he is probably both smarter and more likeable than Bricker, but did Dirksen ever express any interest in running for President?
