Robert F. Scott reaches the South Pole first?

This is something I always wondered about, during the race to the South Pole, Roald Amundsen was the first to reach the famed geographical point. But what if his rival Robert F. Scott reached it first? How would he be able to do it? And what would it mean for British prestige?

Well assuming that Amundsen does go North as he originally claimed to be then Scott's timeline for getting their and back probably remains the same so they die on the way back. In that case it might be years before anyone could confirm it, cue a massive controversy over whether that really counts when someone else gets there later.
