February 16 1912: It looks like Edgar Evans will die. I have studied the Donner party and the rumored behavior of the Franklin expedition. Although we have enough food for now, we have not been getting enough fuel at the depots.
February 17: Render unto Caesar: Evans died today. Although we have not been eating too well, we have not been starving, there should be a pound or two of fatty flesh. The others went along. We rendered more than a pound of fat for fuel. In itself it may not be very much, but if we soak rags in the fat, it will last for a while.
March15: Oates is about to go. I have ordered that nobody goes outside the camp to die
March 19: I am changing my middle initial from F to D. Oates died today. I have persuaded Bowers and Wilson to be like the Donner party. Since food has become much scarcer in the past few days, Oates may be our only hope of survival. We should have enough food to last a week or two. We can also render some much needed fuel.
March 27.: Although the weather is still frightful, we have enough food and fuel to last a week. If we had not been like the Donners, I think we would be dead in a couple of days.
April 2: The weather is beginning to let up. Although it is not really good, I think we can advance a few miles in testudo fashion.
April 3:The weather is much better. We should be able to reach the next depot today.
April 4: Ah the depot! We have food and for once we have sufficent fuel. But where is the dog team? Relief may be close enough to send out a smoke signal or a heliograph.
April 5: Since yesterday was clear, we were able to send out a heliograph and a smoke signal. We have a return heliograph. Relief is only thirty miles away.
April 8: We have finally met up with the relief party. We should be home safely soon.
If the Terra Nova expedition had been lkie the Donner party, could they have survived? What would be the reaction? The Donner survivors were not ostracized and some of them became prosperous.
