RNZAF doesn't dispense with combat aircraft

I could be wrong but I have a vague recollection that at the time the NZ government felt (rightly or wrong) that public opinion was anti-frigates and that replacing their existing ones with subs would be more publicly acceptable; I also have a vague feeling that at first because of this in NZ the ANZAC class were referred to as 'large patrol craft'.
 
As long as New Zealand maintains its friendship with Australia and the United States, it'll be safe enough. But if its allies couldn't come to its aid, New Zealand would be in serious danger. In this case submarines would be useful, for the task of safeguarding the sea lanes on which the island nation depends.
