RN vs HSF question

Hi all,

I was wondering if the germans continue their shipbuilding program into WW1 (so they might finish the Sachsens, Mackensens etc.), what are the british building to counter? I know f.e. there would be 4 Hoods, and there were 3 R class cancelled in favour of Repulse and Renown (are all 5 being built?), what else apart from these? Suppose the war goes a bit better for the germans or something, and the armistice is signed in 1919.

Thanks for your input.

In OTL RN built 12 15" ship (5QE,5R,2R&R ok you could add the 3 LLC) v 2 (B&B) German 15" ships during WWI,
even without anything more than the 4 Hoods do they still not win in a 16 (+3LLC) v 8 (4 with 14" guns or would it be the planned 7?) fight of the new ships.

This is not really about who wins, i was just curious of what would be built by the british if the naval race continues into the war and the germans don't suspend BB and BC construction.

The four Hoods may be too late in the war to be completed. With the 15" turrets that went into the monitors and those built for Furious it would be possible to arm another 2 Renown class battlecruisers but whether the other material required would be available I don't know

If the Germans continue building the 2 Sachsen, 4 Mackensen and 3 Ersatz Yorck, the British would have continued with all 4 Admirals. 3 of the cancelled Revenges became 2 Renown's.

If all 4 Hoods are built and not lost then the RN probably gives up the Revenges as a whole class post war if anything like the WNT is in effect. But it also means at least one of them will get a proper refit . If it was my call I'd refit them first than the QEs

Why would they give up any 15" ships?
WNT gave RN 1 Hood, 2 R&R, 5 R, 5QE, 1 Tiger, 4 Iron Duke, and 4 more 13.5" BBs that would be replaced by 2 new post Jutland ships would they not far rather lose older 13.5" ships?

Having 4 Hoods would give some problems the RN would want something like 4 Hood, 2 R&R, 5 R, 5QE, 4 Iron Duke but that would hurt GB shipbuilding massively so they might still want some new ships in the holiday and it would also have balancing issues with USN wanting 4 Colorado's and what that means for IJN?

Refit wise I think the 4 Hoods are the only ones that get done as they can match later post 37 warships far better due to the extra weight of the Hoods.

I know i said this is not really about who wins, but still can't resist being drawn into questions like what if HSF had bigger guns on some of their latest BB and BCs, like the 4 Konigs with 35cm guns, Moltkes and Seydlitz with 30,5cm guns, Derrflingers and Hindenburg with 35cm guns etc. etc.

Means you are sacrificing armour, which was not how the Germans built battlecruisers
The Germans built thickly armoured BCs with lighter guns than the Brits, who had bigger guns,
(Sometimes) higher speed, but crucially less armour.
The British BCs had a far lower tonnage of armour, compared to the Germans, which continued until the Admirals. Even then, they were slightly less than the Germans

RN 'Invincible' battle cruiser followed Admiral Fishers notion of an fast overseas force to hunt down any German raiders threatening UK overseas trade. That was made possible with numbers of British overseas naval ports and increasing endurance built into these RN battle cruisers. HSF never had battle cruisers , they built "Große Kreuzer " [large cruisers] after their own 'Protected Cruisers' role was threatened by the 'Invincible' class battle cruisers. The RN battle cruisers also needed to take over there own 'protected cruiser' role to fight German 'protected cruisers'. This may be why the RN battle cruiser guns changed from 12" to 13.5" guns....to counter the Große Kreuzer replacing their protected cruiser.

The Große Kreuzer were counter to the 'Invincible' class role the Germans assumed was to counter HSF protected/armored cruisers. German planned use of protected cruisers were battle fleet scout ships and overseas colony deployments. So Große Kreuzer also took over these roles too, and HSF Große Kreuzer adopted 11" guns -but switched to 12" guns , when the RN switched to 13.5" . So when the RN switched to 15" guns - the HSF switched to 14" and then 15" guns.
