RIP Vice President Elect Richard Cheney

Well, the idea is explored in the West Wing's last season, where Santos decides to appoint his new Vice President once he is elected instead of waiting an automatic confirmation with the vote of the electoral college. I think Bush would've gone by nominating a candidate to carry the VP slot, as Taft did with Nicholas Murray Butler back in 1912 when his running mate died in October.

My favourite to become an alternate running mate for Bush would be Montana Governor Marc Racicot. A popular governor who had finished his two terms by then, he had been considered many times as a contender for VP or Attorney General.

Some of the nonsense which went around about Obama is just as/more applicable to the Christian, but of Arab descent, Abraham.

But he's a Republican and a Christian. Not only that, but BHO rejected his Anglicized birth name and chose a very Muslim-sounding name instead. The fact that BHO is a very liberal Democrat and there are some deep suspicions that he's lying about his faith are two big strikes against him. Personally speaking, I could give a damn about his faith (although that fact that he might see the need to lie about it says some not-so-pleasant things), but even if he weren't Muslim he's certainly not Christian.

Banned for bigotry and conspiracy theories.

Amen to that.

Anyway, I'd think that perhaps either Colin Powell or Condoleezza Rice would take office instead(personally, I'd prefer the former.)........but then again, Dubya might just go the non-partisan route and take up someone like Lieberman as Glass Onion pointed out.

Bush could nothavepicked someone pro choice like Powell or Liberman without angering much of the Republican base.

I really don't think Bush would have picked the guy who was the other party's vice presidential nominee mere months beforehand. Especially since Lieberman's big appeal as a 'bipartisan' is his hawkishness on the War on Terror, which at that time didn't exist as we know it.

Apparently everyone misunderstood my reason for Lieberman :)
The point is, if Cheney dies before the electors get to vote, Bush must pick someone his electors would vote for as VP (that might or might not be the dead Cheney - it's a constitutional minefield).
The electors then all have to vote for the assigned person, with at most one dissenter allowed. That's IMHO unlikely (i.e. they would vote for different people).
If (as said above) they fail at that, there's not a VP majority, and the vote goes to the newly elected Senate, which then has to choose between Lieberman and whoever most of Bush's electors vote for. The senate (coincidentally including Lieberman himself) would likely vote along party lines, which means a 50-50 tie - and Gore (the still-sitting VP) breaks the tie in his ticket's favor. ;)
