Richer Philippines

Okay, POD between 1960 to 2000 for the Philippines. Philippine economy grows 8 percent from 1960 to 2000. Filipinos are far more richer than average Chinese today (8 times).

- Martial law is less cruel than in OTL.
- Philippine economy booms at the time of Martial law with average of 11 percent.
- Ferdinand Marcos steps down from presidency in 1988 instead of 1986 in OTL.
- Diosdado Macapagal and Ferdinand Marcos emphasized more radical land reform, encouraged more foreign investment especially in tourism and infrastructure, emphasized rapid industrialization in the Philippines and controls the population growth instead of 88 million in 2007 OTL to 60 million in 2007 ATL.
- Cleaning up the Philippines from corruption.
- And last, the Philippine government successfully suppressed Islamic and Communist insurgency in Mindanao.

Just, do what you can to reform the Philippines so that things turn out better for it than in OTL.

Whats next?

Perhaps a less free trade US that restricted open access to US markets to US allies?

THus all the money that went into China went to the Phillipines, and uh others?:)

Maybe leading to some heavy US tourism also?

Several PODs include the development of the high-tech electronics sector:

1982- Several airlines, including Pan Am Airways, Fuji Airlines, and United Airlines begin transferring and consolidating back office operations to Manila, sparking international attention....

1986- American Express consolidates its Japan and Pacific Rim (JAPAC) operations in Manila under Reynaldo Reyes...

1995-Michael Acabado convinces General Electric to begin outsourcing operations in the Philippines, citing high literacy rate and English proficiency rate....

2000- Bill Gates announces agreement to help transfer Microsoft facilities to Subic Bay and Manila, after inspecting several software facilities...

That's easy, have old Andy Marcos act the part of a good, two-term President who steps down in 1972, instead of declaring martial law. That, and a successor who had the balls Marcos had to take down many monopolies, without the cronyism and ruthless caudillismo said Marcos had.

My POD Philippine presidents (without Marcos):

1946-1953 Manuel Roxas (Roxas did not die on ATL)
1953-1961 Jose P. Laurel (Laurel did not die on ATL)
1961-1969 Diosdado Macapagal
1969-1977 Jovito Salonga
1977-1981 Juan Ponce Enrile
1981-1989 Benigno Aquino
1989-1993 Danding Cojuanco
1993-2001 Fidel Ramos
2001-2009 Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

My POD on this are:

1974 - Apo Macoy makes a significant move on the Spratleys, and has foresight on the potential of the area for its natural resources.

1978 - INstead of solely relying on PNOC, Apo Macoy gives oil concessions in Palawan and Spratleys to major oil giants like Shell, BP, Exxon, and Chevron. Puerto Princesa becomes the "Aberdeen" of the Philippines in the next 10 years.

1980 - Philippine Navy's role is expanded by the first Five-Year Modernization Plan, to cover security needs for the western seaboard of the Philippines.

1983 - A 3rd Refinery is completed in Batangas, beginning the era of Philippine independence from Middle East oil.

1987 - Bataan Nuclear Power Plant goes on-line, signaling the start of cheap energy for the Philippines.

1988 - Philippines begins exporting oil and petrochemical products to Taiwan, Korea, and Japan.

1990 - Second Nuclear Power Plant in Pagbilao, Quezon is completed.

Why would having Marcos stay on be beneficial to the Philippines? The man was a disaster.

Anyway, some sort of FTA with america in the 40s was probably feasible, and would have done a world of good.

Eh, ArabianAdobo isn't too far from the norm of many Filipino's attitudes. Remember, the economic crapsack didn't get started until the late 70's. Until then, the popular perception of Marcos was somewhat approximate to that of a Filipino Lee Kuan Yew.

Like I said, if Marcos didn't have his potent mix of deluded grandeur and outright greed, and instead acted like a good President serving out his second term, you'd probably have a pretty sound if not perfect economy. It was the Martial Law era that destroyed his credibility and the economy.
