Richards beats Bush

what would of happened if Ann Richards had beaten George W. Bush in the 1994 gubernatorial election? what does Bush do? does Ann run again in 1998? what Republican runs in 2000?

Very interesting, because GW Bush emerged as the front runner quite some time before the campaign. Most likely, you would see the same people who challenged Bush: Buchanan and McCain. Barring an unexpected development, it would probably be McCain.

would Powell run?

My guess is that for this to happen either 1994 needs to be VERY different or GW Bush's drink driving conviction comes out. If I recall correctly an allegation was made by Bush's friendsagainst Governor Richards that she had drunk too much alcohol.

Query is there a term limit for governor in Texas? she was elected in 1990.

Does she get looked at seriously as VP in 2000?

there are no term limits for governors of Texas.

hard to say there was talk in 2004 of her as VP, but nothing big, and she said she didn't want a come back of any kind. in 2000 she was 67 to Gore's 52

There is no term limit for Texas governors. Indeed, Rick Perry has suggested that he may run for an unprecedented third term, although he may face a serious primary challenge in the form of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.

As a person who has worked in Texas politics for a long time, I can say that the Bush victory of 1994 took everyone by surprise. Democrats had dominated the state for a long time, Ann Richards was a popular governor even among many Republicans and her term had been seen as generally successful.

The Richards team adopted a strategy of waiting for Bush to make a significant mistake and then pounce on him for it. However, Bush's campaign as very well run (it was basically a rehearsal for the 2000 presidential election) and no serious mistake was made. Had they been more aggressive and not underestimated Bush, and had they been willing to play the same kind of hardball that Rove and Co. dished out, they probably would have beaten Bush.
