Richard Milhous Nixon 1913-1974

My POD is this, around the time Nixon resigned he was suffering from a rather severe medical condition. So, what if that condition had indeed killed him. Either he doesn't survive and the senate trial makes his health worse, or he resigns and he dies shortly thereafter. (I like the first, but it seems to require two pod's and may not be workable.)

So, Nixon is dead around the time Ford would have given him his pardon.

Effects?

The "Rose Glasses" effect likely sets in neutralizing a lot of the extreme disdain for him and lightening the overall negative feelings toward him. However, I think a lot of the negativity would remain; simply lighter than it was or would be.

so the landslide of 1974 doesn't happen? That could have huge implications down the road.

I'm assuming Ford's reelected ITTL.

Might this prevent things like the Church comittee and the other investigations of the post watergate era?

Perhaps, but a death is not going to remove all of the disdain, negativity and bad feelings and will likely only lighten that which is there rather than taking it away mostly or totally.

I think the Dems would have had big pickups anyway because the economy was in trouble. Back in 1958, even the well respected President Eisenhower could not prevent huge Democratic gains in the midst of a serious recession.
