As we know, the period between 1914-2016 for Russia has probably been arguably the worst for any major power. Whether the indicator is economic growth, scientific output or growth in population the indicators show that Russia has been an underachiever. Humanitarian sufferings of Russia have been enormous. Russia suffered not only under First and Second World Wars but also the enormous bloodletting of Civil War and Stalin's madness.

Perhaps the sufferings of Russia only compare with those of China between Opium Wars and the end of Mao's era, period which lasted some 130 years.

However, reading on Russia on era before the First World War conveys a picture of a country ready to engage a new era. Russia was a scientific world power, had world scale artists and writers and the economy seemed to be bound to grow massively. Even Soviet mismanagement did not manage to cut the growth of Russia to a major power only second to US.

As this forum has been around for years (for how many, actually?) I'm fairly sure timelines about Russia engaging in a path less destructive than that of otl have been made. Actually, short of Nazi victory on USSR or US-Soviet nuclear war how could an ATL be worse than OTL?

Suggestions? AH novels? Speculative essays by historians?
