Reverse William the Conqueror?

Could an ambitious Anglo-Saxon lord invade and conquer France? If possible, what would the effects be on french culture and society?

Maybe we could do it by changing the Frankish national character? Make them more egalitarian, have kingship be a social contract, etc. This could cause a succession crisis when a dynasty falls out of power, much like the one when the House of Wessex fell out of power in England.

So, maybe the Frankish crown is decided by election? Perhaps some Anglo-Saxon or Danish lordling is able manipulate the election and have themselves declared King?

Or House Capet/Karling/Whatever dies out, some powerful lordling declares himself King- and his powerbase is weak enough, and Anglaland's king is weak enough- that an ambitious Eorl can get papal sanction...

This is sort of how Normandy was founded in the first place. Just have Anglo-Saxon raiders instead of Danish vikings conquer the northern coast of France.

Not really the best idea, wasting men and ships, when they are needed at home. The protection of the land of king X from king Y is far more important. Even after, say, 1000 there is the threat of those from Norway and Denmark, got to finish them of first, plus keeping a hell of a lot of men on the east coast just in case they manage to make come back. That leaves Cnut, not Anglo-Saxon as such but still king of a Saxon kingdom, later Edward. He still ahs to keep the nobles from taking what they want from each other or himself. Not really a goer unless Harold wins.
