Retrospective US Presidential Election: 1972

Vote in the 1972 Retrospective US Presidential Election!

  • Total voters
    169
  • Poll closed .
I plan to run through every US presidential election, two per week. The 28 elections from 1789-1896 will be run simultaneously with the 28 elections from 1900-2008. Be sure to vote in each election!

For 1789-1800, I will include in the poll everyone who received at least 5% of the electoral vote. From 1804-2008, I will include everyone who received at least 0.05% of the popular vote. Results for each election will be posted on the dedicated Retrospective US Presidential Election Results Thread (here) and compared to the actual results. The thread for general project discussion is here.

Here are the links to the 1860 election and the 1792 EC vote.

Hey guys ah.com can "make history" this time around by electing Linda Jenness the first female U.S. President. A vote for Jenness is a vote against the war dragging on in Vietnam and a vote in favor of civil rights and women's rights! It even has the extra bonus of amending the constitution to allow 30 year olds to be elected president.

Jenness for President 1972, to inspire girls and ladies around the world! :D

I'm not sure to be worried a split left will give the election to Nixon or flabbergasted Jenness might actually pull it off.

Crap, had I known Jenness was actually in a position to win, I would have voted for McGovern to keep another Socialist from gaining office

Well, if the election wasn't amended before the election, wouldn't that create a constitutional crisis?

I can't imagine what could possibly happen when the elected candidate is unable to legally receive her electoral votes. I was actually tempted to vote for Jenness just so we could discuss what would happen, but I'm a huge McGovern fan so had to go with him in the end.

It seems like there's something about 1972 that attracts controversy and crisis. Watergate in OTL, then Fear, Loathing and Gumbo, now this...

Jenness '72! Make AH.com make the US electorate make fictional history!
Although seeing as she's under 35 who's her VP nomination.

Andrew Pulley... a twenty year old steelworker and Vietnam veteran. So we get the Speaker of the House as President, i e we either get a retrospective House election to figure out who holds the House and DJC would likely translate the presumably quite split vote into the top party only having a plurality, so we end up needing to figure out a coalition, and who gets to be speaker anyway. Or we assume Carl Albert is the speaker. IIRC he did not want to be President so we get...

President James Eastland

Or we just assume the constitution has been (Or gets) amended to allow any eligible voter to serve. But constitutional crises are more fuuunnnnnnn... :(

Actually McGovern seems to be the more able candidate. The only good liberal in the race fit to be President. I wish Ihad voted for him. I mean is Jennes fit to lead after undoubtedly years of Vietnam under Humphrey and Johnsonand make an effective commander in chief?

*laughs uncontrollably*

So, they have to pass an Amendment, or face the unpopular decision of kicking out the President-elect and Vice President-elect, just because they are too young.

I suspect they'd lump the unpopularity, given that we're talking about Castroists.

You know how you wanted people to vote against Fremont because it would spark a Civil War? So would this, I'm pretty sure.

Yep. That's why it's so cool. We also have a campaign for a constitutional amendment as the race develops!

With all those early 20th century presidents like Eugene Debs, 30 year olds might even be eligible in our TL.
