Retrospective US Presidential Election: 1928

Vote in the 1928 Retrospective US Presidential Election!

  • Total voters
    138
  • Poll closed .
I plan to run through every US presidential election, two per week. The 28 elections from 1789-1896 will be run simultaneously with the 28 elections from 1900-2008. Be sure to vote in each election!

For 1789-1800, I will include in the poll everyone who received at least 5% of the electoral vote. From 1804-2008, I will include everyone who received at least 0.05% of the popular vote. Results for each election will be posted on the dedicated Retrospective US Presidential Election Results Thread (here) and compared to the actual results. The thread for general project discussion is here.

Here's the link to the 1816 election.

Socialist Labor Party. But I know that whichever party wins ends up this election cycle will end up being screwed with the Depression so yeah....

Smith, just to see what putting a catholic in office this early on in US politics would do, on second though being blamed for the depression would probably begin a wave of anti-catholic activity.

Al Smith.

Though he did embrace moderate social reform in New Yorkduring his time as governor, with his die-hard support for free trade and the right to enjoy a good gin and tonic he was more of a classical liberal than Coolidge.

Makemakean gives his vote to the Democratic Nominee, the Happy Warrior, Al Smith!

Electing a free trade Democrat as opposed to a protectionist Republican is going to go a very long way to butterflying the Depression, or at least the deep, long collapse we're used to IOTL.

Imagine something more like the 1926 or 1924 recession, or the 1921 depression at worst, as opposed to the sustained 1930-1932 contraction of our own history.

So, both because of lack of other real choices and because of the above, I'll hold my nose and vote Smith.

Hoover was a great guy. Too bad he chose to lead the party of Prohibition and plutocracy.

Al Smith, primarily because he's a pro on the main "personal choice" issue of the day (against Prohibition), probably a bit more fiscally conservative than Hoover (re free trade), and, well, I'm Catholic, so...
