How do people on this fine site feel that the America of 1908 would react to the Socialist Party doing so well in the Presidential election? Debs likely wouldn't win historically unless his votes were concentrated enough (it would likely go to the House (?) which would likely award it to Taft (even if the House was majority Democrat Bryans has done so bad in this election I imagine it would be suicide for the party to throw the election to him).
Also, assuming the Congressional elections go roughly the same as the Presidential elections do, here is a very rough outline of what the 1908 Congressional session could look like:
United States Congress, 1908:
Senate:
Republican Party: 56 seats
Democratic Party: 19 seats
Socialist Party: 17 seats
(47 seats needed for a majority)
House of Representatives:
Socialist Party: 161 seats
Republican Party: 156 seats
Democratic Party: 63 seats
Socialist Labor Party: 8 seats
Independence Party: 2 seats
Prohibition Party: 2 seats
(197 seats needed for majority)
The Republicans keep a solid majority in the Senate thanks to the fact that only a third of Senators are up for election at any election, but the House is basically split evenly between the Socialists and the Republicans, although one or the other could gain the majority if they form a coalition with the Democrats (the other parties are too small to be relevant in these negotiations). It's likely it'll be a Republican - Democratic coalition.
