You don't know anything about Debs, do you? He was a member of the revolutionary wing of the party and a founding member of the Industrial Workers of the World, a union which proclaimed revolutionary intent in its charter and was the home of many of the founders of the American CP. The only reason Debs was the SP's consistent Presidential candidate was because he was the most influential and charismatic member of the party, the racist right-wing of the party would have kept him off the ballot if they could have afforded to.

Edit: This rant is also the reason I voted for him. :D

From what he wrote he didnt sound like he was in favor of a violent revolution, more of a "revolution through ballot".

Would have voted for Debs, but c'mon. Roosevelt.

Eh Debs outshines him in my opinion, even if he wasnt as awesome as Roosevelt he basically fulfiils most of my checklist for perfect politician. Roosevelt was good but he was still an imperialist and racist.

Eugene Debs said:
I am for Socialism because I am for Humanity!

You can vote for Eugene Debs, who would be moderate left by current global standards, or:

Bryan, who really brought about the rise of religious activism in politics, and sought to blue law much of the country. Bryan's attempt at free-silver would have somewhat helped end the deflationary spiral that was dooming farmers left and right, but I don't want to support a fundy.

McKinley, who was for big business in the days of even bigger business. Pass.

Obviously McKinely. Not because of his positions, but because he started a long standing trend of people getting capped in Buffalo. Cultural reasons.

I'm going McKinley guys. I may be a religious conservative and like much of what Bryan says on foreign policy, I'm a supporter of the gold standard. I wish WJB would jump to the GOP and challenge that progressive Teddy.

Bryan, this is my first time voting Democrat. In 1896 I voted for Matchett on the Socialist-Labor party ticket but now i'll vote for anybody but McKinely only because I've been disgusted with the imperialism in the Philapeens and Spanish-American war.

I haven't done 1896 yet. Or are you in character?

OOC: Yeah, based on my politics I think that I would have been a radical republican up until about 1892 then vote socialist in 96 because I thought that Bryan was a religious nut but then in 1900 decide to vote for Bryan out of disgust at the imperialism of the McKinely administration and feeling that the Republicans were no longer the party of Lincoln.

No Marxist, not even Lenin, said "Hey guys, let's kill our way to the top!" That's Narodnichestvo. Almost every serious Marxist understands that revolution will be a necessarily violent affair due to the fact that no matter the nature of the conquest of power by the working-class, the bourgeoisie will not allow it and will resist using all the power of the state at their disposal. Look at Allende in Chile. Any Marxist could have told you that something like the Pinochet coup was GOING to happen, and that was in response to a non-revolutionary like Allende. This does not mean that revolutionary socialists advocate violence by the working-class, but all serious revolutionaries recognize the need for workers' self-defense.

It didn't happen in any of the European countries where the sane Socialists took over. In Germany in 1919, it was the Commies who revolted against the Socialist government.

I recently read a book about the influence of the eugenics movement in the US. I voted for Bryan because I cannot imagine he would support it, unlike Roosevelt, who will become President after McKinley gets shot. I don't know about Debs on this issue.

He was very anti-eugenics, part of why he was considered a radical socialist was because he believed heavily in racial equality and ending segregation. (man I should stop acting like a fanboy for the guy)

Vice-President, chief. McKinley got assassinated less than a year after being re-elected in this election, making Roosevelt the president.

I didn't know people in 1900 could predict the future. Must be the reason why at least 50+ souls must be voting for that piece of fucking shit from Ohio.

He was the candidate of the majority party at a time when the economy was picking up after the 1890s depression. Isn't that how people usually get elected?
