Resurrection Day

I'm going to order this book tomorrow and I'm curious what did you guys think of it? The premise looked great, but I'm wondering how was the presentation of the book?

I really enjoyed it. You have to suspend your disbelief over what happened to Europe, but if you accept that, the rest of it is very well done (despite the fact that a major part of the plot seems to have been stolen from Warday). It's kind of dark, the main character has 'issues', but the world that has been created is extremely realistic and rather scary.

I'd also like to recommend this book. I found it a fairly well put together AH thriller. There were a few logic problems here and there, but not enough to require massive suspension of disbelief*.

*This, of course, depends on your belief of the destructive power of nuclear weapons. I've seen some lively debates on this matter on the reviews at Amazon.com.

Oh, and if you can guess who the USAF general is supposed to be, you'll get a prize!

The war gets limited, which is about as likely as Sealion succeeding. Otherwise a great book.

The Resurection Day

As for the book - I was disapointed. I suspect it was written first and foremost to make a political statement. OK, a fair fraction of literatute is driven by that by I don't like it. A recent example for a similar book was "Appolo's Children" and if you read the discussion in the archives, you will understand what I mean.

"The Resuraction" really needs a lot of leeway... I.e. how do you imaging a Russian pilot who has just bombed NY and killing milions, surviving in New Jersey (if the memory surves me right) without being captured/linched/etc? This is an example of a problem on... let's say human level. On largeg level - what happens in Europe is just impossible, given the doctrines of the Warsaw pakt and NATO.

I will not say more because I am risking to give away plot points.

Do you have any idea how many russian emigrants and collaborationists were living in New York and New Jersey back then? Lots! How would they find him?

Well, a lot of these Russian emigrants would be anti-Soviet and would not help hide a Russian bomber pilot. Heck, since this guy was a Bolshevik henchmen, they're probably be the ones stringing him up!

I doubt the Russian airforce pilots had the adequate language training to impersonate any of them. Besides, he didn't hide his identity and you can imagine that even the ultimate liberal will be ... angry at him, to put it mildly.

One of the Best AH universe's put to pen-it cries out for a sequel or an anthology of short stories in the Resurrection Day Universe-ie both the 1962-1972 and post 1972 peroid.

Before I say anything about the book I think Ramsey Curtis is a mix of Curtis LeMay and Ramsey Clark, the Attorny General under the Johnson Administration. I say this because he helped in the Civil Rights movement. It states in the book that Ramsey Curtis made the Civil Rights Acts uphold in 1963, even under the use of force. So who do you think Ramsey Curtis is?

I just finished the book. I liked it a lot, although I'm shocked Europe didn't get blown apart. Most of the book was very believable, from the meat filler  , high gas prices, martial law, etc. It was a very chilling version of the United States. I don't understand why China wasn't communist, but I can live with that.

The book was written well and was easy to follow for the most part. I thought the book dragged a little in the middle (when they're in Manhattan) and could have been 75 pages or so shorter, but that's a small complaint. The ending was great and the last twenty pages or so were some of the best, in my opinion. I didn't like Sandy that much until the end, but I really don't know why. Carl was well rounded and I liked his personality. However, I thought the minor characters really made the story great. William, aka Two-Tone, one of the few survivors from the invasion of Cuba, George the editor of the Boston Globe and Jim, the resistance leader in Manhattan. The British commando thing was a little silly to me but was still enjoyable to read. Overall, great book.

Also, It was a shame Kennedy was really dead, but at least He Lives ;) . It was cool that Walter Cronkite was released from Ft. Leavenworth and that Martain Luther King was a resistance leader.

All he has to do is claim that his documents were in his apartment in Manhattan. How are they going to check up on him? The US government isn't going to have a lot of time and money to go around looking at everybody's papers. They're bloody lucky if they've got a functioning local police force.

I am currently reading all my time travel and alternate history books. I am currently reading "timeline" with "resurrection day" coming up next. Looking very much forward to it...

I found it a good book first read but on re-reading it I found I had a few problems with it. No reference of UK's own A Bombs, we had them at the time of Cuba and our Victor and Vulcan bombers were on alert ready to counter attack as soon as the Soviets started anything..I think even the French had the bomb by then. It was never explained if we disarmed or what.
No mention of Brits and French garrisons in Berlin-were they just wiped out along with the Yanks or did the Russians manage to avoid them? The whole of NATO just sitting there and doing bugger all seems a bit far fetch, everyone was on alert at the time of the crisis and there would have been some fighting in central Europe, even if it didn't go nuclear. Never understood why China fell apart.

I've used the same POD for a scenario, but I've tried to be more realistic by having all Western Europe involved - and I've also had the war spread to China, Japan, the Koreas and Australia (not sure how realistic THAT is, but hey :)). Net result is nuclear winter - Peshawar Lancersesque degeneration of First World into barbarianism - and postward major powers are South Africa, Brazil and India.
