Resurrecting the Eagle

Perhaps one of the most strong holds on the history of humanity is the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. The West fell in 476 while her eastern half lived on, however it too would eventually fall to its enemies and thus once and for all bring about the end of the dream of Rome.

There was however more than one attempt to bring back this dream, from the creation of the Holy Roman Empire to the attempts of other world leaders to make for themselves an empire so vast that they could claim the title of Caesar. Most of these however failed, the Roman Empire died and was never to rise again. Even with the creation of the Holy Roman Empire it was only a name, the Germans who ruled it could never bring back what had been the greatest empire in the history of all mankind. There was however other attempts, other people and leaders attempted to bring back this dream of Rome. Perhaps not on the shores of Italy but the hills and mountains of Greece, where the last vestige of Roman authority and power fell in the 15th Century. It is no great surprise that the fall of the Eastern Empire led to the impression among the eastern peoples that they now held the responsibility to keep the flame alive. Russia, the great empire to the east now tended the flames of what had been Rome.

The Orlov Revolt, a rebellion by the native Greeks against the authority of the Ottoman Turks. This rebellion was aided by the Russian Empire, however they did not commit enough and the rebellion though successful in crippling the Turks long enough for Greece to win its independence, it did fail to secure what had once been a mighty empire. Catherine the Great herself had been grooming her own grandson to take the throne of a would be restored Byzantine Empire. Had Russia indeed committed the necessary forces in order to win this rebellion, it is not all that insane to think that he Russians would attempt and capture the greatest prize in the East.
