One of the results of the War of the Austrian Succession was that the Queen of Hungary (Maria Theresia of Austria) was triumphant in having her husband, Francis I elected Holy Roman Emperor.
Previously, the Elector Karl Albrecht of Bavaria, the king of Bohemia since 1741 had been elected as Holy Roman Emperor Karl VII in 1742. However, when Karl VII died in 1745, the Treaty of Füssen was signed between Austria and Bavaria in which Maximilian III renounced his rights to the Imperial succession, and Austria recognized the election of Karl VII as legitimate.
AFAIK the general decision is that Bavaria was ill-equipped to support the imperial splendour, while the French proved lukewarm allies. But what if Bavaria had been able to maintain the imperial throne?
