The tercios technically still exist though. The tercio of Sicily is a tercio unit which after it's service as one of Spain's tercio units, later fought in the Peninsular War, Carlist Wars, and Rif War. Nowadays it's known as Regimiento de Infantería “Tercio Viejo Sicilia“ n.º 67.

With all respect to all other units, Polish Winged Hussars are simply the most impressive as far as the looks go.

Alright, my thoughts:

Samurai: Interesting, probably my second choice, but it would just look weird for them to defend the Emperor or any modern public official seeing as their last gasp was in trying to defend the Shogunate.

Winged Hussars: Just plain cool. Top pick.

Tercio: The issue is that it’s not distinctive in its component units, only a drab swordsman or musketeer or pikeman. Only when a company or the whole unit is assembled does it look impressive.

Landsknechts: After what they did to Rome, they can rot in Hell for all I care.

Hartschier: Very nice... but what would you have them do? Bayern doesn’t exactly have a head of state anymore.

Janissaries: You want to restart WHAT?! That’s just plain illegal under a whole rafter of modern laws.

Caroleans: How different would they look from the present Swedish Royal Guards?

Musketeers: A solid choice, but France already has the ceremonial cuirassiers. Can both exist at the same time?
