What if the British gave more of their holdings in Africa responsible government and allowed them to become Dominion status? I'm thinking specifically about Kenya.
Somewhat related- also, what if there were more European immigration to those colonies? More white dominions, I guess.
You need a POD in the late 40's early 50's. The problem was the shortage of money in the UK, and the attitude of the US (yes, there were British political issues too).
The US was pushing for the colonies to be let go, and Britain was in no financiacl shape to do much more.
There were studies done as to developing the african colonies into self government and dominion style status, followed if required by full independence, but the problem was the timescale.
The british worked out (correctly) that the problems weer twofold; infrastructure and the tribal nature of the countries and their internal poloitics. The infrastructure was (relatively) easy to handle, but the tribal structure was not. Their idea was to build up a non-tribal civil service on the British model, to serve as a backbone for the countries governmant, and to bind the tribes together. However in order to make this a stable insitution would need 50-60 years (so its own tradition and structure would make it independent of the tribal structure). This saw the african countries going independant around the year 2000.
So you need political change, particularly in the USA, to allow this sort of plan the time it needs. Because unless you have responsible (non-tribal) government, you just end up in the same sort of mess as in OTL - the colony/dominion status isnt the issue
