Resistance in AH-Occupied Serbia

Did Austria-Hungary actually plan on annexing Serbia? I think the Hungarians would have had quite a few complaints about that. If you mean resistance against a puppet government, it would probably be strong in the beginning, weaken over time, then flare up every now and then when the puppet state's popularity takes a dive.

A-H had various plan regarding Serbia (and Montenegro), some included even annexation...but she never ever really decided what plan really use.

How do you think she'd deal with Serbian resistance?

With a lot of brutality and without really have a clue about resolving the situation in the long term; annexing the place (yes there were serious plan for that) it's the worst case scenario as will increase the resistance of the people and even in case of succesfull suppression, Serbia will just complicate the already chaotic situation of A-H

Is there anyway A-H and/or the rest of the CP could abandon Serbia?

How long do you think the armed Serb resistance would last?

A couple of years. Then you start running out of willing young men and arms. Though alot depends on just how harsh the occupation is, how much emigration out is allowed, the level of material that can get smuggled in, ect.

I just don't see A-H occupying much of Serbia in this situation. What A-H would do is to remove Serbia's ability to assume the role of leader of the Slavs by reducing its strength politically and militarily.
1. Serbia would be forced to give up the most if not all the territory it gained during the 1st and 2nd Balkan Wars;
2. Macedonia would go to Bulgaria;
3. Montenegro would probably get a portion or all of the Sanjak of Novi Pazar; whatever is left of Novi Pazar would be occupied by A-H;
4. The Karageorgivich's would be deposed and one of the surviving members of the Obrenovich's or Prince Mirko of Montenegro (he was the heir to the throne if King Alexander of Serbia remained childless) would be re-installed as monarchs, closely supervised by A-H.
They would be tasked with maintaining order in Serbia, not Austria-Hungary.

Where could material support come from? France? Britain? United States?

What else could happen?

The problem is that WIen was like Will E. Coyote after catching the Road Runner...and now what? They have plan to:

- absorb Serbia
- unite her with Montenegro in a federation under a puppet or an Hasburg king
- cut part of it and make king someone of more pliabe
- do what proposed by you

They never ever been capable of deciding what they really want even at the litteral end of the war and this political indecision mean that the problem will continue to worsening in pure A-H style

Which one of those would've been the worse?

Could a rump but independent Serbia survive?

How much more effective could armed resistance movements (i.e. the Chetniks) become?

I'm not sure how to interpret the question. At some point there will definitely be one or more free territories/republics established by the resistance movement. Even in OTL there was one, the Toplica free territory that briefly existed in 1917. But these free territories cannot hope to survive in the long term.

IMO, the best case scenario for the Serbian resistance is that someone in Vienna and/or Berlin starts seeing the occupation as a costly adventure; so they enact a partial withdrawal and hand power to a new regime that is a bit more liberal and legitimate but still beholden to the CP.
The conditions of CP victory allow very limited room for improvement for the Serbs (unless A-H breaks down or undergoes a very serious internal crisis).

Unlikely that you'd get much from the Great Powers; what would the motivation be to meddle in a doomed, localized, isolated resistance movement? Funding would likely come from members of the Serbain diaspora and perhaps the Italians.

I was referring to Serbian resistance liberating parts of Serbia from AH occupation and declaring it an independent Serbia.

Could armed Serbian resistance liberate Serbia from the CP during a withdrawal?
