Research Inquiry: New England

Hey guys; this isn't for any particular timeline (yet), but I was wondering if anyone could suggest good book dealing with early New England? I've read a couple of biographies (one on Cotton Mather, another on John Winthrop and I'm also reading about Johnathon Edwards right now), and Demos' "Entertaining Satan" abut the folklore of witchcraft, but haven't been able to find any good books that treat New England as a whole. Is anyone knowledgeable about the literature and able to suggest a few book books?

In what timeframe(s)?

Pre-colonial to the Revolution?

Best,

Jeremy Belknap's History of New Hampshire (1792) is an interesting source for early New Hampshire.

DH Fischer's Albion's Seed, while only 1/4 devoted to New England, is very good in my opinion for getting a broad sense of certain traditions in the region - though the book is very focused in some ways, and shouldn't be relied upon alone.

Interesting. I was hoping to find a regional history, without having to dive into individual state histories. But, that being said, I may end up doing that anyway and enjoying it. I love local histories!

I actually know that my Da has a copy of Albion's Seed; I may have to borrow it the next time that I'm home.

It's not a straight chronological history, but

Yeah, generally that's where I would like to start. I can always move forward from there.

It's not a straight chronological history, but it is comprehensive (~1600 pages); probably can find it at a college/university library or possibly inter-library loan:

The Encyclopedia of New England: The Culture and History of an American Region - Burt Feintuch and David H. Walters, Editors. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2005.

Best,

There's a good podcast on the History of the United States that has recently spent the last few dozen episodes on the early stages of New England. Presently, its on the founding of Rhode Island.
