Republics of Acre and Antioch

These 2 crusader cities were governed by communes in the 13th century, before they were reconquered by the Mamelukes. Had they been able to avoid capture, could the communes eventually have become independent? This would make them more like the Italian trading republics.

If they can maintain good relations with the neighbors, they could become important trade links between Europe and Asia. However, I don't know if they can remain independent. Seems like Venice or someone would want to dominate them.
