Republican Party in a CS-victory Timeline?

What would realistically happen to the Republican Party in a timeline where the Confederate States win the American Civil War?

I suspect it would become a party pushing for the abolition of slavery within the United States itself (assuming your POD has some slave states remaining in the Union) and more likely to take a firm line against the Confederacy in terms of foreign policy. It would also have been the party advocating free trade and might have gone back to its early roots as a bastion of nativism, particularly as the Democrats gained much of their strength from recent immigrants in the big cities.

Ah.

So the Dems would have been the immigrant-friendly party, and the Reps the nativist one? An interesting divide that is.

Would any Republican win the presidency after Lincoln for a while? I don't think so, as the association with civil war and loss would be hard to shake off.

That would depend on how well McClellan does in his first term. I would expect Salmon Chase to be the man to beat for the Republican nomination in 1868.
