Is there any way for socialists in America, early American Democratic Socialists, and the forerunners of the American Labor Movement to fit into the Republican Party or even the (temporary) National Unity Party in the 1850's-60's?
The early Republican party and early Socialism don't seem totally impossible to A: combine, or B: form into some sort of an umbrella for a coalition of progressive, abolitionist, small government, human rights, pro-labor, pro-business politics.
Perhaps a much more socialist-friendly Fremont followed by a much more socialist minded President Lincoln?
What would such a party look like and what would its continuation look like?
Results?
