Republic of the Rio, becomes part of US?

The Republic of the Rio was a short lived country encompassing, Coahuila, Monterrey, and Matamoros, it was however conquered by the Mexicans when they were at war with Texas

But, could it been possible, that the Rio would've survive (Which is unlikely, but this is the base of the question) and become part of the US like Texas?

I may be wrong, but I think the Republic was a protest against the government of Mexico and was done to promote a more federal government with more focus on provincial rights. They may not be interested in joining the US even if we're interested in taking them (Also not likely, the region was already reasonably populated with Mexicans and America was quite racist at the time).

That being said, it is a possibility. If attitudes in the US morph a little more towards individual state rights and there is a push (Probably starting in the North) to liberate those under non-republican governance and include them in the "grand experiment" then you might get some headway. You'd also need to have Texas and the Rio Grande come to an agreement on their border. It was a sticking point between them and it kept Texas from supporting them as heartily as they might have.

With the Rio Grande joining the US then you could also see us grabbing the Republic of Sonora and Chihuahua as long as we're at it. When the Republic of the Yucatan asks to be annexed by the US, the precedent (and senators) of the two-three new states might allow us to grab that too. With hispanic states, we'd play a more invested part in Mexico and Central America and over time, who knows. The US might gain a wankish desire to expand (For Democracy!) or at least keep republics in the Americas stable and free.

That's probably optimistic.

If the Republic had got more Texan and/or US support to fight away the Mexicans, almost surely it would have later joined the USA like Texas. I think the PoD here is that Rio Grande leaders seek Texan support, do not pick a fued with it while they still have to affirm their independence vs. Mexico. If Rio Grande had joined the USA, the rest of northern Mexico would have been annexed in 1848.

Personally, this is one of the AH ideas that I have a certain fancy for, along with Brazil-wank, Japan-wank, and good ol' Ameriwank, so I think it would be interesting if someone did a TL on a more complete Manifest Destiny, with the US taking Oregon country up to 54'40, and more of but all of Mexico, the effects would interesting to see.

A bit difficult since the Rio Grande capital, and a fair chunk of their claimed land, was in the territory Texas claimed. Even with that problem they did seek Texas support, but Texas was trying to win Mexican acceptance of its independence and didn't want to be seen as supporting a rebellion, or giving up its claim to the Rio Grande.

The US government could mediate between Texas and Rio Grande and persuade both to cooperate, as well as send some covert support of its own, both secessionist republics were lands that the Southern Democratic leadership of the time desired to annex.

And no, Rio Grande, like the rest of northern Mexico, was not so densely populated at the time that its US statehood would raise strong racist concerns. Rio Grande, like Chihuahua and Sonora, was stuff that the racist Southerners felt confortable to annex. Like California and Arizona-New Mexico, they felt confident that they would swamp the relatively scarce Mexican population with their own settlers. It was just political-diplomatic butterflies that the USA did not annex northern Mexico after the Mexican-American War. The real concern, from a racist PoV, was the densely populated southern Mexican heartland.

What if Santa Ana is either assassinated or overthrown shortly after returning how following the disastrous treaty of Velasco. While Santa Ana was incompetant both as a general and a statesmen he was one of the only caudillos able to semi-rule of the entirity of mexico. If he dies after the first defeat, there is a good chance that mexico will go through another disasterous round of civl war, allowing for more outlier areas to break free and declare independence. This could give another opportunity for the reemergence of the Republic of the Rio, backed of course by a healthy contingent of American and Texan fillibusters.
