Repercussions of a Canadian Nuclear Weapons Program?

I was inspired by the future threads about China and Iran. However, since there were Canadian scientists in the Manhattan project, what if Canada was given nuclear technology and asked to help with any arms race that came up by the Americans?

I mean, publicly asked and we say yes, etc etc. No back-door treaties of that nature.

Of course, Canada gets it's own nuclear weapon sometime after Britain (just so we can have a semi-reasonable time line here), and then goes public with it, saying that these nukes are 100%-Canadian, not the second-hand/second-command American nukes that Canadians talk about endlessly.

I think we'd see a more paranoid USSR. Way more paranoid.

I mean, Canada has vast deposits of Uranium, and we are a first-world nation, with the technology being in the public (because you never know about classified "Pencil Expenses") eye with these weapons at our disposal.

Do we still get thought of as 'those nice Canadians'?
