Reino Renegado – A Philippines TL

I

On June 3, 1571, the survivors of the battle of bangkusay including the leader and general and hid in the domains of Pansonum or Malang Balagtas, due to the desertion and unwillingness of Rajah Sulayman to further the war with the Spanish.

In late 1573, Limahong gathered an army of 3,000 Chinese warriors, renegades and vagabonds and fled to the island of Selurong. There, he and his band of outlaws sought refuge, established their own kingdom and waged war with the Spaniards.

By this time, a force of 40,000 soldiers and 135 ships was sent by the Ming emperor to kill and capture the pirates. Limahong and his troops first arrived in Ilocos Sur in early 1574 where they quarreled with the Spanish commander, Juan de Salcedo. After a brief struggle with the Spanish army, his troops were driven away from the city. The pirates then chanced upon merchant ships from Manila doing trade with the Chinese, and learned from two captured ships that Manila was a new and relatively unprotected Spanish settlement. From this information and the knowledge that China had a no-war policy with its neighbors during that time, he decided to capture Manila and establish himself as ruler of his would-be kingdom and stronghold.

On this time Malang Balagtas in his domains would never think about helping Lakandula against Limahong, he was told by his people who warred in the battle of Bangkusay that Lakandula is allied with the Spanish.

Foiled at Manila to establish a kingdom of his own, Limahong set sail for the Lingayen Gulf, to settle in Pangasinan province. As a rich place and far enough from the reach of the Spaniards and the Chinese emperor, Limahong resolved to stay here and to make himself master of the region.

Near the mouth of the Agno River about four miles from the sea he built a fort consisting of an outer palisade of palm logs, and an inner enclosure of palm planks which sheltered his palace. He also built pagodas and dwelling places preparatory for permanent settlement.

Limahong announced to the people that he had conquered the Spaniards and that he had come to rule over them as their king. They were commanded to pay tributes to him. Thereupon, great terror and fright filled all the neighboring villages, and all of them, with no exception, received Limahong as king, and they obeyed him and paid him tributes. To make matters worse for the natives, he seized their principal chiefs and held them as hostages.

Malang would send his agents to Limahong and said to give the chiefs that he seized as hostages to him and ally to him, this coincided with the start of the expulsions of the missionaries in the upper Pampanga, Meycauyan and the Upper Cagayan region(Irraya/Gaddang and Ituy), regions where Malang Balagtas has the most power.

Malang would make peace with Limahong giving him the coastal area of the Kingdom of Kaboloan, however the inner area must be returned.

The Spaniards could not tolerate the presence of this Chinese corsair in their neighborhood. A scout ship had been sent by Governor Lavezares to follow the pirate fleet and it soon returned and reported where it had gone. An expedition of 256 Spaniards and about 2,500 Filipino troops, including the Lakandula of Tondo and his sons, set sail in 59 vessels for Lingayen on the 23rd of March, 1575.

In Pangasinan, the motley army was swelled by the addition of some companies of Pangasinan soldiers. They crossed the bar of the Agno River on the 30th of March, 1575, their presence unsuspected by the Chinese.

Juan de Salcedo had been appointed Field Marshal in place of Martin de Goiti. He was assisted by Captain Lorenzo Chacon, Pedro de Chavez, and Gabriel de Rivera (sic). Salcedo noted, on entering the river, a narrow place where the channel could easily be blocked. He stayed there to prevent the escape of the pirates. He ordered Captain Gabriel de Rivera and his company of 28 men to march immediately by land, and Captains Pedro de Chavez and Lorenzo Chacon to sail with 9 small boats and 80 men to ascend the river and to capture Chinese vessels with the Spanish fleet. The time was to be appointed so that both the land and the sea forces would arrive at the fort at the same instant, and make assault at the same time, so that they might be better successful in their purpose. Salcedo was to remain behind with all the rest of the forces to await the opportunity of furnishing aid in any emergency.

In the end the Spanish would be defeated as the troops from Malang and Limahong due to the troops of Tinguian, Irrayans and Pagan Tondoans joining forces with the army of Limahong which is resulted in men with 50,000 strong against that of the Lakandula-Spanish troops, the Spanish and Lakandula’s troops were leveled out and the Spanish would not be able to reinforce their troops in Mexico which would take a year to go back.

A temporary peace in 1576 would be made wherein the Lower Meycauayan, Central and Lower Pampanga and Lower Cagayan up to the Northern most boundary of the Irraya area would be under Spanish rule.

His capital would be on Lagawe in the Mountains near Ituy, in the mountainous part of Cagayan.

On 1588 the way to meet with the Sultan of Brunei, Magat Salamat, Juan Banal, and Augusiín Manuguit stopped at Calamianes briefly but refused to stay in Cuyo and recruit soldiers there because they realized that the territory is a border territory of the Visayans and Bruneian dominated areas.

The Conspirators could gain Soldiers, however, time would not side with them as the other Kingdom in the North has plans against them and getting rid of them is one of these, although they would be able to get troops to Manila, the loyal Christians would want them destroyed because they are deemed as traitors by Christians who recognize the Spanish as their overlords.

Also, the Spanish would not see that Malang Balagtas would arrest the chieftains in Lower Cagayan and Lower Bulacan who allied with Lakandula and handed them over to the Spanish, he did this because he hated the people of Lakandula and his kin who are claiming his kingdom.

In the end Magat Salamat would be killed by Malang Balagtas accomplices on 1588 which made their plans against the Spanish not prosper, it was said that Malang Balagtas hated those of the clan of Lakandula and he himself treated the clan of Lakandula as those trying to usurp the throne that was rightly for his kin.

The Kingdom of Selurong of Malang Balagtas would be called as the Kingdom of Lagawe due to its capital as the Kingdom of Limahong who was given land in Kaboloan as a reward for his alliance with him, the Kingdom of Limahong would just be reduced after his death to just Lingayen.

Malang Balagtas would nominate Calamayin as a part of his succession after his own sons before his death on 1590, he would be replaced by the chosen heir of the council of Malang Balagtas from on one of his sons Alon as his successor, both Malang and Alon would have a similar policy to the Spanish, in which he would choose peace.

During the tax revolts in the Spanish ruled Selurong or Luzon and the Portuguese-Dutch wars, Due to the unfair taxing of Lower Cagayan, Central Pampanga, Ilocos, Lowland Zambales and Lower Meycauayan, the people there would revolt against the Spanish and Alon would ally with the Dutch to support the rebels.

The rebels would win against the Spanish but Lower Cagayan, Lowland Zambales and Central Pampanga would be annexed into the Kingdom of Selurong in 1603 and the Ilocos area would be given to the Kingdom of Limahong, with the aid of the Dutch, the loss of Ternate and parts of the Philippines would be an embarrassment for the Spanish, they would only retain Lower Pampanga and Lower Meycauayan as they are loyal to the Spanish, however the Kingdom of Selurong would make sure that the Irrayans and the Pagan Tondoese would get the preferential treatment and Central Pampanga and Upper Cagayan would get a famine which would be one of the reasons why the Kapampangans and Ibanags would be a minority Selurongians while the Irrayans and Tondoese would get an upper hand because the immigrants from other parts of malay archipelago, the dutch mercants and chinese to their area would adopt their languages.

The TL looks finished... hahaha I would consider this finished unless there are people who would consider me to continue this..
Well, . . . ;)
Just randomly came onto this TL. Not being too terribly familiar with Philippine history, the TL nevertheless certainly sounds very interesting. If you have other priorities, I understand, but this? This is a masterpiece.

The Dutch would employ Javanese in trading to the Kingdom of Selurong since the start of the reign of Alon, this would reintroduce islam in the island but it would have no significant converts since the Kingdom would remain primarily pagan and both Christians and muslims would be tolerated, those who have coerced to convert from Islam to Christianity who became nominal Christians and other nominal Christians who prefer islam particulary those in Cagayan and Central Pampanga when the areas were retrieved from the Spanish would convert back to Islam causing a significant decrease of the Christian population the real catholics would remain Christian, later that population would remain having a population Christian in the rural areas and Muslim in the urban areas but their religion is nominal for the most, however the muslims would be a minority less numerous as Christians at this point.

King James would send envoys to King Alon of Selurong congratulating him of being able to resist the Spanish and King James due to their similar standing against the Spanish and in the early part of 1600’s the Dutch missionaries would arrive in the area in and cause Protestantism to start to spread in the country.
