An alternate scenario, inspired by "Britannia Rules the Stars" which was posted at Scifi Ideas (maybe also here?)
*1700–1721: Sweden wins the Great Nordic War, forcing Denmark to give up Norway. Norway ends up in a personal union with Sweden.
*18th century: Backing up each other, France and Sweden dominate Europe.
*4 July 1776: Rebelion in what until that date was British North America establishes the USA, which becomes an ally of France and Sweden.
*19th-20th centuries: The western world is more peaceful and democratic, with Sweden standing out of wars becoming a centre for science and technology. Less densy populated and with smaller towns who are less affected by light pollutions once gaslights and electric streetlights kick in, Sweden becomes a popular place for astronomy. France, Sweden and the USA followed up by Russia and the UK are economic rivals, but not military enemies.
*1953: Sweden launches the first unmanned spacecraft into orbit around Earth.
*1959: Sweden launches the first manned spacecraft into orbit around Earth.
*1973: Sweden launches the first manned mission to Moon.
