The Crown of Croatia

Unknown King of Croatia

Knin, Croatia, AD 1085

Dmitar Zvonimir, King of Croatia and Dalmatia, was depressed. He didn't slept well last night. His wife, Jelena, tried to cheer him up, but when your own ( and only son ) prince Radovan, lies sick ( it appears some sort of fever ), who can be happy?

But, as the day went on, his Court doctor entered his room and said that the young prince looks better now, his fever seems to be bit weaker and he managed to get some sleep. This improved King's mood. Tommorow morning, while still weak, young prince was feeling much better, his fever seemed over. Doctor said that he expects that the prince will fully recover.* The King and Queen were overwhelmed with joy.

This is the POD: In OTL, prince Radovan died and king Zvonimir had no heir. This sparked the chain of events wich resulted with the end of independence of mideval Croatia.

So, here I start my first attempt of TL centred on Croatia. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also, since this is goeing to be a pretty tough TL, any help or comment is more than welcome.

Hmmm... I'm thinking of a more extensive and longer-lasting Čakavian as the official language of Croatia. How's the Glagolitc script fared in this TL?

I'm really not sure. The extent of Čakavian dialect will mostly depend upon the extent of Turkish occupation of Croatia.

About Glagolic script, I would say thet this TL will mostly follow OTL about Glagolic... Considering that Croats in Middle Age ( allmost until 19th Century in some parts 9 used three scripts ( Lathin, Glagolic and Bosančica-Western Cyrillic ), I doubt that ITTL will be something much different...

Nice, I am following with interest! There's no legend on the map, so what do the red lines represent? Trade routes or large roads?

Also, expansion into Slavonija and Srijem are definitely in order! And Beograd, why not?

Yes, red lines are some sort of trade routes/roads...

About Srijem/Slavonija, I must say that this map is somewhat uncorrect, but I had no better map at hand. Bosna at the time seems to be under Duklja, so there and Zahumlje/Travunija would be in order, not Slavonija/Srijem...

Hmm, I know that the Una and Sana (maybe even Vrbas) valleys were under Croatian rule since their arrival in the Balkans, and never switched to Serbian or Orthodox hands; Una-Sana remained Catholic and Croatian until the Ottoman Empire's arrival...and even then, Bihac held out until 1592.

Indeed. But when I said Bosna, I meant on area of upper flow of Bosna river ( modern-day Sarajevo to Zenica area ), at the time that was Bosna.
