Refounded Roman Empire?

I assume this is pretty cliche but could the Roman Empire be reconstituted? I don't mean an empire controlling the same lands as Rome, with Rome as it's capital. I mean, a return of the full on Roman Empire.

What is the latest date this could have been accomplished? What would this new Roman Empire be like?

It's not cliche if it's not been completely executed in every shape or form possible.

Also from what date onwards are you referring to?

I'd argue that the Western Roman Empire was refounded by Charlemagne, but the Pope gave him the title of Roman Emperor, while there was one in Constantinople (well, an Empress). Why they couldn't just split it on West/East has generally baffled me.

I'm assuming you are talking about the Western Roman Empire? Well, the best chance of opportunity in reconstituting the Western Empire will probably be during the reign of Otto III. If he lives longer and is more successful in implementing his policy, he might be able to rebuild the Western Roman Empire.

Or at the very least, an Empire that actually attempted to emulate the Roman Empire of antiquity with proper administrative structure and not just an empire in name only.

Well its because of the fact that an Empress held the Eastern throne, not an Emperor. If Irene hadn't overthrown her son, then maybe some kind of compromise could have been reached, but I doubt it. Constantinople regarded the Western Emperor as little better then a barbarian.

I would very much like to see a timeline on this.

Aouod a surviving kingdom of odavacer work? Maybe it takes back North Africa and somehow incorporates the domain of soissons?

Speaking of that; you could always go with the domain of soissons reconstituting he Roman Empire in the west.

IIRC a woman holding the throne was the justification for giving Charlemagne the title. It wouldn't have been as easy if there had been a male Emperor on the throne, holding (in theory) both Western and Eastern imperium.

I think it might...after all the Gothic kings see themselves as rulers of both the Goths and the Romans at the same time. However, it could also result in a scenario whereby the Gothic identity took over the Roman identity as happened elsewhere in Western Europe.
